Carinthia, Austria's southernmost state, has castles thick around its two main towns. Near Klagenfurt: Burg Hochosterwitz (18 km), Schloss Tentschach (7 km) and the ruins of Waisenberg, Steuerberg and Hochkraig. Around Villach: Burgruine Federaun and Burg Landskron 5 km out, Burgruine Altfinkenstein, dating from 1142, 8 km, and Schloss Pöllan, from the 16th century, 19 km.
