Edinburgh Castle is 0.5 km from the center and Arthur's Seat 2.3 km, which sets the tone: 31 castles and 88 hills within 25 km. Craigmillar Castle is 4.5 km out, Dundas Castle 13.8 km, Fordell Castle 15.7 km and Crichton Castle 17.9 km, with Aberdour Castle, a ruin across the Forth, at 13.1 km. Calton Hill, Blackford Hill and Corstorphine Hill are the easy climbs; Scald Law in the Pentlands at 14.2 km is the serious one.
Nineteen beaches along the Forth is the surprise, Portobello Beach at 5.6 km and Wardie Bay Beach at 3.4 km among them, and five lighthouses, from Granton Lighthouse to Inchkeith Lighthouse out on its island. Holyrood Abbey at 1.6 km leads 58 ruins. A good share of it is walkable from the center, which is what RLQuest is for.
Each hexagon covers a little over 5 square kilometers. The brighter it glows, the more places are inside it. The numbers mark the highlights listed below; the dot in the middle is the center of Edinburgh.

RLQuest knows these places too. Which means:
Some of your daily quests lead to a real place near you. The app uses your location to check you were really there.
If you're the first person in RLQuest to complete a quest at a place, it's your first find. The Place Book shows you which kinds of place you're still missing.
Every walk uncovers tiles, each about 350 m across. Over time you can see which corners you know well, and where you've never set foot.
